The town of Civita di Bagnoregio stands on a small hill, dominating from above the valleys of the two small torrents Torbido and Chiaro. The clayey hill on which Civita di Bagnoregio is built has been subjected to very strong erosion for centuries due to atmospheric phenomena, and has been slowly and inexorably crumbling. Today, the town is almost totally uninhabited and can only be accessed by a single road, made of cement. Because of these characteristics, Civita di Bagnoregio has been called ‘The Dying City’, for its future, already written, foresees its slow but inevitable decline as the erosion of the small hill on which it stands increases.
Wandering through the alleys of Civita di Bagnoregio is an experience not to be missed. Narrow lanes will lead you to the discovery of wonderful views and hidden squares, occasionally encountering a characteristic little restaurant where you can relax and enjoy a well-deserved gourmet break before resuming your walk. Everything here tells of an ancient past, the old houses, the large church, the arches, every detail is unique!
