Necropoli di Tarquinia

images-1.jpegnecropoli.jpegnecr1.jpeg

In Tarquinia, an element of exceptional archaeological interest is the vast necropolis, the Monterozzi necropolis in particular. This contains a large number of tumulus tombs with chambers excavated in the rock, in which an extraordinary series of frescoes is preserved, representing the largest pictorial nucleus of Etruscan art that has come down to us, and at the same time the most extensive document of all ancient painting prior to the Roman Imperial Age.

The extraordinary series of painted tombs makes the Tarquinia necropolis, in this aspect, the most important in the Mediterranean, so much so that it was defined by the father of Etruscology, Massimo Pallottino, as ‘the first chapter in the history of Italian painting’..
