Sutri
Sutri is called ‘Antichissima città’ (Ancient city) since its origins possibly date back to the Bronze Age. In 728, Liutprand (the king of the Lombards) donated the city to Pope Gregory II, forming the first nucleus of the papal state and the beginning of the Church’s temporal power.
There are many points of interest to visit:
- the necropolis, with its splendid 7-hectare archaeological park;
- the Roman amphitheatre carved into the tuff;
- the Mitreo, with its early Christian mosaics and paintings;
- Villa Savorelli with its Italian-style garden;
- the Cathedral and its crypt, located in the delightful historic centre.
